Josh Samman Scores Knockout of the Year! Dec06

Josh Samman Scores Knockout of the Year!...

Huge congratulations to MMA Master’s fighter, Josh Samman on an earth-shattering head kick knockout victory over Ultimate Fighter winner Eddie “The Truck” Gordon at UFC 181 in Las Vegas. Josh had difficulty executing in the first round against Eddie Gordon. The middleweight winner of “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 19, Gordon used his strength and his wrestling to control Samman in the first. But Gordon was loading up on every punch he threw, throwing from left field, and it guaranteed him a spot in the highlight reels for years to come. As Gordon appeared to wind back to fire a right hand, Samman blasted him along the side of the head with kick. Gordon went down unconscious and the fight was over in an instant. “He seemed to struggle a lot with southpaws, so we watched tons of tape to see how to counter that,” Samman said after the fight. “That’s essentially where that kick came from and we trained to set it up time and time again.” It’s been a tough year for me. Tonight was easy compared to what I’ve been through and I can’t thank everyone enough for their support.” It was unquestionably one of the best and most vicious knockouts of the year, but it also ranks up there with the sport’s best head kick knockouts ever. Watch the kick...

Fitness Boxing with Coach Cedric Benn Sep26

Fitness Boxing with Coach Cedric Benn...

‘There’s fitness, then there’s boxing fitness’ Kelly Steele Sep 26, 2013 – 3:12 PM EST The Windsor Star When Mary-Jo Kovacs of Windsor invited me to box with her, I was pretty pumped. I’ve never boxed and I have always been interested. When I met the 56-year-old Kovacs and coach Cedric Benn, 33, a personal trainer at Refine Fitness, I was a little nervous. I wasn’t sure if I was going to be learning the basics or duking it out in a ring with Kovacs. Benn came over, handed me a pair of gloves and started to wrap my hands. I asked why they needed to be wrapped and Benn calmly responded:  “You’re a writer and you need your hands to work, so we want to make sure you don’t bust your wrist or hand.” Not exactly the response I was expecting, but good to know. He gave me his old boxing gloves to use. Jokingly, I asked if he had to clean the blood off them, and the grin on his face answered the question. * * * Benn has been a personal trainer at Refine Fitness since October 2011. From 2002 until 2006, he was a boxer in Montreal who held an impressive record of 24 wins and six losses. He always dreamed of going pro but to do so needed to commit full time to training; something which was impossible since he needed to work. “For me the second best thing is training others,” he said. “I always said if I didn’t make it to the pro level I would do my best to help others to get to the elite level.” His clients range in age from teenagers to 60, with the majority being women looking for some self-defence moves....

Jackson City Fight League Results Feb25

Jackson City Fight League Results...

Busy weekend of competitions that saw us travel to 4 different cities in the US and Canada. We’re proud of everyone that fought and supported the team. Special congratulations go to the following fighters that went Beast mode on Saturday night in Jackson City, Michigan in their Prison City Fight League MMA debuts: – Chris Heedo for his dominant 1st round victory by Rear Naked Choke at 145lbs. Chris slammed, back-mounted and choked his opponent within the first minute of the fight demonstrating his terrific Jiu-Jitsu ability. This is a fantastic achievement for a guy that walked into our gym 3 years ago lacking confidence and totally out of shape at around 230lbs– what a remarkable transformation! – Dan Fraser for his dominant Unanimous Decision victory. Dan was calm, cool and collected and used his fantastic boxing and Jiu-Jitsu skills to control and beat-up his opponent for every second of the fight! – Goran Arnaut for somehow managing to Knockout then Submit his opponent in the very first round, all without breaking a sweat or even blinking his eyes (Goran is a scary dude before and during a fight). – Mahyar Makki for his precise striking exhibition that left his opponent completely bruised and battered. – Shawn Farr for demonstrating heart and never giving up despite facing a much bigger, more experienced opponent. Well done, everyone! Way to represent Central Combat Sports and Daniel Valverde Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. A final thanks to Coach Dave Orton for his exceptional corner/cutman work, Coach Cedric Benn, Coach Jeremy Garrod and Darrin D’Amore for all his help backstage. It’s a good night when everyone comes out of the cage without barely a...

Hard work paying off for NHL’s Zack Kassian Feb19

Hard work paying off for NHL’s Zack Kassian...

Hard work paying off for Kassian by Jeff Angus from Canucks.com Canucks.com freelance writer Jeff Angus recently had the opportunity to talk training and Zack Kassian with Dave Orton. Orton, who has been training professional athletes for over a decade, worked with Kassian in the summer of 2012. Angus: Dave, tell me a bit about your background in fitness and sports training. Orton: “I played junior hockey and lacrosse, and lucky for me at a young age I was exposed to a really good strength and conditioning coach in St. Catherine’s, Ontario, where I played. ”I was never the guy who made a team because I had any talent.” It was always the work ethic? ”Yeah. Any team I have ever made was a result of working harder than the guy who didn’t get the spot. ”From an early age I had a lot of respect for having to earn it. And that carried on into my MMA career as well. I was never that talented, but I was stronger and more dedicated than the other guys.” So with training hockey players – was that something you got into at the outset, or did it come more along the way? ”I was always involved with hockey, and I was always training hockey players, but my biggest break as a trainer was getting [former NHL defenseman] Andy Delmore as a client. ”He was one of the first guys I got years ago. And then it was just the process where you have to build your reputation off of the success of the people you are training.” Flash forward to present day… ”Marty [client Matt Martin of the New York Islanders] is made out of stone. I couldn’t over train that guy if I tried. The...
